Bonbonnière

ca. 1730 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This box, of gold and mother-of-pearl, is delicately decorated with a combination of translucent enamel and opaque white enamel strewn with blue crosses. The decoration and technique are reminiscent of makers working in Germany, suggesting that this box was made there.

Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
