Brief description | Walnut cabinet with twelve geometric hardstone panels, Italy, late 19th century. |
Physical description | The cabinet is made of ebonised walnut. Both the lower and upper parts are encrusted with marble and coloured breccia. The joints between the stones are covered with strips of wood, and all the panels are framed in moulded wood. The vase inlaid in the central door, although inspired by seventeenth-century prototypes from the Grand Ducal workshops, obeys none of the rules, gives no clues at to its volume, and, in addition, is placed on its black marble background without a horizontal surface to stand on and without spatial references. |
