This table top is very similar to one made by Michelangelo Barberi for the Duke of Norfolk's home Arundel Castle in preparation for the visit of Queen Victoria in 1856. The composition of both tables includes both domestic and exotic species of flowers.
Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.

Physical description | Circular table top of black marble inlaid with a large wreath of flowers and foliage. Species include carnation, dahlia, hibiscus, rose, tulip, and lily-of-the-valley. The tabletop is on a gilt bronze base with four straight legs surmounted by figures, on a square base with incurved sides. |
