Historical context
The Château de Morée or Kastro Moreas or Kastelli, “Morea Castle”, is now a ruin. It guarded the entry to the Gulf of Corinth, near Rion. Sultan Bayezid II had built it in 1499. A French expeditionary force had beseiged the castle and forced the Ottomans to surrender in 1828.
