This customised jacket was designed by Culture Shock, a label run by Yuzun Koga and Jeannie Macarthur. The four slanted, welt pockets are the main feature of this offbeat jacket with its bespoke ‘tailoring’ theme. Large, hand tucked stitches are worked in white thread, and a narrow, black and white ‘tape measure’ trims the front edge.
The garment was among 21 customised Levi denim jackets commissioned in aid of the Princes’s Trust by Blitz magazine in 1986.

Wool and denim
"They're classics with a twist" said Jeannie Macarthur describing the work of Culture Shock (British Vogue, November 1986).
Culture Shock were among twenty-one contemporary British designers commissioned by Blitz magazine in 1986 to produce a customised Levi denim jacket. All the jackets were displayed at the V&A and were subsequently auctioned in aid of The Prince's Trust.
Tailoring elements are used as decorative features: note the tacking stitches and different wool checks which emphasise the cut of the sleeve. Other than the distinctive metal buttons little appears to remain of the Levi original. However, on close inspection the direction of the flat fall seams on the back faithfully copy those of a denim jacket. The tailored jacket and the Levi denim jacket are both classics: Culture Shock have combined the two to produce a witty garment.

| Object history | Purchased. Registered File number 1986/1713. This jacket was displayed in an exhibition at the V&A in Gallery 57, organised by the Exhibitions Section rather than the Fashion and Textiles department. The show brought together over twenty top international designers who were each invited by Blitz magazine to adapt, modify and reinterpret a classic denim jacket into a completely new design. For example, Joseph produced a knitted version with "Joe's Angels" on the back and a design of cherubs, and Rifat Ozbek heavily trimmed the basic jacket with military frogging, braiding and epaulettes. The jackets were all illustrated in Blitz. Following the exhibition at the V&A, the jackets were sold at a charity auction to benefit the Prince's Trust, at which time the Fashion and Textiles department purchased this Culture Shock jacket. -Daniel Milford-Cottam (2011) |
