Place of origin |
The decoration of this box suggests that it was made at a time when the revived Rococo style was popular, probably around 1825-35, and the carved stone panels indicate that its place of origin, presumably German, hels a tradition for this kind of work.
Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
