Snuffbox
1816-1819 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
The Rococo scrollwork of this 19th-century box is in the style of boxes made in London, and more rarely in Paris, in the 1750s. The flowers are also 18th-century in inspiration, but their naturalism and the diamond-pattern of the ground indicate that they were carved in the early 19th century.
Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
