Place of origin |
The rustic scenes decorating this box are based on the paintings by David Teniers the Younger (1610-90), a Flemish painter who became particularly popular in France during the middle years of the eighteenth century. The panels are made of shell and hardstone set in engraved and enamelled gold.
Henri Delobel worked as a journeyman at the hospice of La Trinité from 1748 and became a master eight years later. Between 1756 and 1771, he stood sponsor for five goldsmiths, including two members of his own family.
Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world’s great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
