Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.

Physical description | The mirror stands on an oblong base with incurved back and front and a foliate boss applied to the centre; it pivots at the midpoint of two fluted column supports, each with a bud finial and addorsed sphinxes seated at the base. The oval glass is in a rectangular frame that has a palmette border and is chased in the angles with acanthus foliage. A shell molding is applied to its lower border, and it is surmounted by a vacant laurel cartouche flanked by putti and surmounted by a ducal coronet. A foliate boss is applied to the center of the base. |
