Inside the lid of this box is a miniature of a hunting scene. It is taken from an engraving after J.E. Ridinger's Die Par-Force Jagd (hunting in which the quarry was driven towards an enclosure).

Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.

Physical description

A cartouche shaped, enamelled gold and mother of pearl snuffbox, the cover with an applied gold scene of a mounted huntsman and his hounds pursuing a stag, surrounded by a gold frame of foliage and strapwork enamelled in translucent red, green and blue, and opaque blue and black. Inside the cover a painting of a hunting scene under glass.
