Snuffbox

1759 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Frantz Bergs was goldsmith to the Swedish Royal Family. While Bergs' craftsmanship is highly accomplished, the rendering of figures on the box highlights the degree to which Stockholm was behind Paris in the development and evolution of the Rococo style.

Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
