The cover is encrusted with hardstones forming a romantic rocky landscape of towers, ruins, waterfalls and a swan. The technique is reminiscent of the pietre-dure workshops of Florence.

The hardstone panel may have been created by Giovanni Morelli in Rome, ca.1810; the box itself was put together between 1819 and 1832 by the Paris goldsmith Gabriel-Raoul Morel, who was noted for the range of media in which he worked. A number of boxes by Morel with Napoleonic connections have survived, suggesting that he may have been a supplier to the court.

Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world’s great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
