The style of gold chasing on this box is similar to that on a box attributed to Jérémie Pauzié, goldsmith to Catherine the Great of Russia - See Alexander von Sodlokoff, Russian Gold and Silver, London, 1981, pl.165.

Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.

Physical description
A rectangular, jewelled gold snuffbox, the cover enamelled in translucent green and red and opaque white, depicting a landscape and castle, the reverse similarly decorated with an architectural ruin in a rocaille cartouche, both panels, extensively restored, later made and set in with the box
