Place of origin |
Louis, Prince de Condé, Duc d'Enghien (1621-86) is shown on the left. He and Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne (1611-75) were two of the greatest soldiers of 17th-century France. The miniatures, set into this London-made box of 1817-18, were painted between 1800 and 1815 in France, during the vogue for 17th-century French enamel portraits. They are executed after original engravings of Condé (1662) and Turenne (1665) by Robert Nanteuil.
Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.

That of Turenne was engraved in 1665 after a pastel also by Nateuil, now in the Musée du Louvre, and that of Condé was engraved in 1662. A similar enamel miniature of Turenne, although facing in the opposite direction, is in the Louvre (inv. n. RG208). |
