Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This beaker was made in Torun, an important centre for trade and goldsmithing in seventeenth-century Poland. The gilded cup is applied with an openwork silver sleeve, embossed with cartouches of St Christopher, St Andrew and the Annunciation. The striking decoration and part gilding suggests that this cup was intended for display.

Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world’s great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
