This beaker was made in Torun, an important centre for trade and goldsmithing in seventeenth-century Poland. The gilded cup is applied with an openwork silver sleeve, embossed with cartouches of St Christopher, St Andrew and the Annunciation. The striking decoration and part gilding suggests that this cup was intended for display.
Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world’s great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.

Physical description | A silver-gilt beaker covered by a silver sleeve that is embossed with three cartouches depicting St Christopher, St Andrew, and the Visitation. The beaker has a very small splayed foot and a slightly splaying lip. The cartouches are set within a pierced and chased web of floral, foliate and scroll decoration. Winged cherub faces are at the bottom of each cartouche. A row of beading delineates the end of the decoration before the lip. |

This beaker was made in Torun, Poland, an important centre for trade in the 17th century. The gilded cup has an openwork silver sleeve, embossed with figures representing St Christopher, St Andrew and the Annunciation. It was probably used as a communion cup by one of the Protestant congregations in Torun.
