Snuffbox
19th century (made), mid 18th century (made)

Place of origin |
The enamelled plaques that decorate this snuffbox date possibly to the mid 18th century, when the work of David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) was particularly popular among the aristocracy and widely reproduced. The fascination with Tenier's genre scenes, however, were also fashionable in the 19th century. It is therefore possible, that the enamelled plaques are contemporary with the mounts.
Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
