Snuffbox

1774-1775 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Many of London's snuffbox-makers and specialist craftsmen were immigrants or from immigrant families, bringing Continental designs and techniques to the English trade. George Michael Moser (1706-83), born in Switzerland, was a gold chaser, enameller and drawing teacher who became a prominent figure in the London art world. He was the first Keeper of the Royal Academy.

Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
