The Canton Waterfront

Painting
c.1850 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Rectangualr watercolour painting depicting the Canton waterfront, changed almost beyond recognition since the pre-Opium War period. The protestant church dominates the skyline. A George Cross, red on a white ground, can be seen in front of one of the buildings, though this may be the artist's error for the Danish flag. The Union Jack is visible in front of the second of the East India Company's two factories, with the Stars and Stripes outside the former American Hong, the last building on the right of Old China Street.
