This spur was purchased from the collection of William Tayler. Tayler was a civil servant working for the East Indian Company in Bengal from 1829 to 1859. His extensive and varied collection was bought by the South Kensington Museum in 1874 and 1875.
It was purchased as a former possession of the "King of Oudh". 'This probably refers to Birjis Qadra, the 14 year old son of Wajid Ali Shah, Nawab of Avadh. Birjis Qadra was crowned ruler of Awadh (Oudh) during the so-called 'Indian Mutiny' of 1857 when Avadh was annexed by the British. He was often referred to as the 'Last King of Oudh'.
