Cabriolet

1750-1780 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This elegant cabriolet is painted with flowers on light-coloured grounds, typical of the kind of decoration that was used in France on carriages (and furniture) in the mid-18th century. This kind of decoration is often referred to as 'Vernis Martin' because the Martin brothers were noted for such decoration on furniture in the first half of the century, although the fashion was soon copied by other makers.

The carriage is on loan to Tyrwhitt-Drake Museum of Carriages, Maidston, Kent
