This medal depicts King Charles I, crowned on the obverse side with the inscription 'Carolvs D.G. Mag. Britan. Fran et Hib. rex. fi. de.' [Charles by the grace of God, King of Britain France and Ireland]. On the reverse side Prince Charles (Charles II) is shown on a galloping horse, with the engraved letters C.P.

This is a gilt electrotype copy of a seventeenth century medal. Electrotyping, a form of casting which uses electricity to make a close copy was pioneered in the 1840s.
