Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) is one of the world's best-loved children's authors and illustrators. She wrote the majority of the Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale.
Beatrix Potter set several of her tales in the Lake District. During long summer holidays she would escape the oppressive society of her parents and wander among the hills and valleys with her sketchbook, capturing the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. Her sketchbook of 1903 contains numerous watercolour impressions of Newlands Valley which lies west of Derwentwater and beyond the Cat Bells. It is possible that this larger and more finished sketch of a view of Newlands from Swindale also dates from 1903 when she was gathering ideas for her sixth tale, The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-winkle (eventually published in 1905). Beatrix Potter based Mrs. Tiggy-winkle on her pet hedgehog, Mrs. Tiggy, and several of her sketches of Newlands Valley appear as backgrounds to her illustrations.
