This round bronze medal depicts a military monument with the inscription 'Field Marshal Lord Raglan. Born A.D. 1788.' On the reverse side there is a view of the Head Quarters of the British Army before Sebastopol with the legend 'Died in the service of his country at Head Quarters before Sebastopol, June 23rd 1855.'
James Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan was a British Soldier who was chosen to command the Britisih troops at the outbreak of the Crimean War in 1853, despite th fact that he was sixty-five years old and had never led troops in the field. He died of dysentery before the general assault on Sebastopol in June 1855.
