Brief description
Painting, design for a turban aigrette, opaque watercolour and gold on paper, Jaipur
Physical description
Painting, opaque watercolour and gold on paper, the turban jewel has been drawn with white, red and green stones, presumably to represent diamonds, rubies and emeralds. Although in purely Mughal style, this drawing reflects the degree to which Mughal aesthetic influence overlaid the arts of northern India at this period. The aigrette (ornament) has a long, curving plume, ending in a pendant green stone at the top, and an oval centred lower section, surrounded by petals, terminating in a second, pear-shaped green stone at the bottom. All the sections are outlined in gold, and are coloured predominantly red and white, with touches of green.
