This bronze medal, dated 1812, depicts Lieutenant General Marquis Wellington. On the reverse side the shields of Britain, Portugal and Spain are shown in an altar with trophies at the base and the legend 'Enter'd Madrid, August XII.' In 1812 Wellington routed the French at the Battle of Salamanca and liberated Madrid from French occupation. In recognition Wellington was given the title of Earl and the Marquis and became the commander of all Allied armies in Spain.
