This bronze medal depicts Charles the Marquis of Cornwallis. Cornwallis (1738-1805) was the first governor general of India appointed under the terms of William Pitt's East India Act of 1784 which brought the administration of the East India Company under the control of the British Government. On the reverse of the medal there is a figure representing Fame and the words 'His fame resounds from east to west.' The edge is inscribed 'Value one penny at R.Dick's Post Office, Bury, 1794.'
