Inscribed with title and dated on the back August 12 1861; inscribed on mount in a different hand Algiers. Taken when on board H. M. S. Scourge - with Sir W. Codrington going to Constantinople.

Historical context
The Scourge was a paddle sloop that went out to the West Coast of Africa station as flagship in 1854, and was later in the Mediterranean as a private ship, finally returning home in 1861. (Information from National Maritime Museum in Searight Archive.)
