Historical context note

Although the inscriptions on the backs and on the mounts are in the same hands, and all the drawings were apparently done on the same journey, at least two different artists seem to have been responsible for these drawings. They have been disbound from an album or removed from a portfolio, since the inscriptions on the backs of some of the mounts refer to the drawing on the facing page; on the back of the mounts of SD1285:1 & 3 there are offsets of the drawings facing them. Some drawings in SD1285:1-8 appear to be in the same hand as SD.1316
