  • This fine proof of The Departing Storm was given / to my grandfather C.R. Leslie, in 1845 by the / engraver Mr. David Lucas. Mr. Lucas held this / proof in particular esteem as it was one of the / first two landscapes on which he had worked with / John Constable. It was as a result of these that / he received the commission for the famous series of engravings / of English landscape scenery. (Typewritten label; 'first' corrected from 'forst'.)

Historical context
David "Lucas held this proof in particular esteem as it was one of the first two landscapes on which he had worked with John Constable. It was as a result of these that he received the commission for the famous series of engravings of English landscape scenery."
