This silk is a complex lampas weave in which the pattern (in this case, parrots in roundels) is formed by weft threads that are supplementary to the main warps and wefts forming the ground, and are bound by a supplementary warp. It was probably woven in Lucca, Italy, which was an important early centre of Italian silk weaving.
