Historical context | SD.1255 was formerly attributed to William Holman Hunt: see Searight Archive. However, neither the handwriting of the inscription nor the handling of the drawing give any indication of this. Moreover, on 26 April 1870 Hunt wrote to J. L. Tupper from Jerusalem that he had been working there steadily for the past three or four weeks (J. H. Coombs, A. M. Scott, G. P. Landow and A. A. Sanders, ed., A Pre-Raphaelite Friendship, The Correspondence of William Holman Hunt and John Lucas Tupper, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1986, p.110). |
