Black coat in fine black wool with Princess line and long sleeves. It is mid-calf length with a nipped in waist and built up shoulders, and the collar is formed by a panel which starts at the back with a narrow yoke and is pleated over the shoulders. The upstanding collar has gently rounded edges and at the front it is echoed by a second inner collar of white cotton waffle piqué.

It fastens at the waist and at the collar with hooks and eyes. The coat is half-lined including the sleeves in black and the front edges have taffeta interlining.

Physical description

See Elizabeth Ann Coleman, "The Genius of Charles James", cat. no 362. This coat is identified as having been made in London, probably around 1934. It is the only example of this coat that Coleman identified at the time of the book being published.
