Angelica Kauffman was a Swiss-born painter who worked exclusively in England. She was a popular portraitist and also painted mythological scenes taken from ancient Greek and Roman literature. The three scenes printed on this fabric were originally drawn by her and engraved by W W Ryland, and were published in 1778. They depict figures and a chariot taken from 'The Triumph of Venus'; female figures adorning a statue from 'The Sacrifice to Pan'; and three nymphs crowning a bust of Mercury.
