This figure is one of a number made under Imperial command in the early 15th century and given as diplomatic gifts to leading Tibetan religious figures. During the reigns of Yongle and Xuande a number of Tibetan hierarchs were invited to the Chinese court to conduct religious ceremonies or to create diplomatic links and on these occasions presents of images or ritual objects would be given.

Physical description

Figure made of cast bronze and gilt of a Bodhisattva, kneeling on one knee and holding out his hands. The figure rest on an oval base made of gilt copper, decorated in 'champleve' enamel on the top with rosettes within hexagons and round the side with bats flying amongst clouds, in colours on a turquoise blue ground.
