Son and grandson of famous Parisian jewellers, Jean Fouquet designed highly innovatory jewels for his father's firm from 1925 to the 1930s, when it became a victim of the Depression. Simplicity and clear geometric shapes, enhanced by materials chosen for their colours and textures, are central to his designs. Luminous colours in contrasting combinations were favoured. 'Jewels', he declared, 'must be composed of forms legible from a distance, the miniature is detestable'.
