Historical context | Drawn by the artist at Lodiana (Ludhiana), in the Punjab, while the Shah was in exile and under the protection of Ranjit Singh: see Vigne, A Personal Narrative of a Visit to Ghuzni, Kabul, And Afghanistan ..., 1840, pp.7-9 & 353-4. Installed by the British as Amir of Kabul, in place of Dost Muhammad Khan, 1840. Of the Sirdozye family, and not the brother of Dost Muhammad, who was a Barukzye. Cf. sketches in album in India Office Library and Records (WD.3110 f.39f, 40a-d). |
