Historical context
On the separate label Sir J. C - - is given as Sir J. Campbell, a reference to Sir John Campbell, then the British envoy at Teheran, with whom Vigne stayed in 1833: see The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society of London, Vol.9, 1839, p.512, and Vigne, Travels in Kashmir...,1842, Vol.1, pp.12-13.
Vigne briefly described all of his journey in an article in The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society of London, Vol.9, 1839, pp.512-6: see Searight Archive; and more fully in Travels in Kashmir...,1842, Vol.1, pp.5-21.
