Paul Follot (1877-1941) designed this carpet made of hand-knotted wool in 1919-1920. The clustered flower heads and arabesque decoration are characteristic of French luxury objects of the time. Follot was a French furniture designer whose first pieces were in the Art Nouveau style. He adapted his work to suit the tastes of the 1920s. In 1923 he became director of the design studio Pomone, which was attached to the Paris department store Au Bon Marché. In 1928 he collaborated with Serge Chermayeff (1901-1996) to design some of the first French Art Deco furniture. Waring & Gillow’s department store made made this widely available to the British public.

Carpet of hand-knotted wool with a pink ground with a surface design of black branching spirals and orange and yellow flowers. A wide border at top and bottom of sprays of flowers and a narrow borders of lines at the sides.
