Design for an ironwork bracket and pendant object, possibly a lantern or other form of light, from an album of designs from the firm of Francis Skidmore (1817-1896) but not designed by him because it dates from about 1899 to 1900. There is a design for an ironwork bracket in the album which is dated '11th of October, 1899'. Like this design, it is in the Art Nouveau style which is an international style of art, architecture and design that peaked in popularity at the turn of the 20th century (from about 1890 to1905) and is characterized by highly-stylized, flowing, curvilinear designs often incorporating floral and other plant-inspired motifs.

Physical description

Design for a pendant object, possibly a lantern or other form of lighting, in pink and blue watercolour on brownish oiled paper stuck on to a page in the album.

The provenance is the grand-daughter of Francis Skidmore.

Descriptive line

Design from an album from the firm of Francis Skidmore (1817-1896).

Production Note

Francis Skidmore died in 1896 and as there is a design dated '11.10.99' in the album and the style is later than those designs made in his lifetime it could not be by him. In 1872, Skidmore's Art Manufactures and Constructive Ironwork Company went into liquidation and was taken over by Winfields Ltd of Birmingham.
