Place of origin

This lithograph is thought to be after a computer generated image produced by Dutch computer scientists, Leo J.M. Geurts and Lambert Meertens. They worked in the late sixties exploring the role of structure in visual imagery. The original image would have been created using a computer program written by Geurts and Meertens. The program consisted of a set of rules by which coloured squares could be manipulated into different patterns. One program could produce a large number of different images.

This image was acquired by the V&A as part of the Computer Arts Society collection. At around the time when it was produced, Meertens and Geurts were both involved in a Dutch branch of the Society, known as CASH.
