Cizhou wares are stonewares made all over northern China. They were seen as ‘popular ’ wares, not fine enough for use at court. Although not as widely exported as other wares, they share features with contemporary Korean and Middle Eastern ceramics. Cizhou wares also appealed to Japanese taste and found favour in the West in the 20th century.
