Object history
According to Rodney Searight: - Bt. Sotheby Belgravia (via Holder), Nov.1972, £10'.
Historical context
Reproduced in `Punch' 29 January 1876, p.25. During 1875, serious rebellion against the Sultan, in Bosnia and Herzogovina, had given Austria, Russia and Germany the opportunity to bring pressure on him to introduce long-promised but unfulfilled reforms. Britain reluctantly agreed to participate in the representations.
For further information on the events satirised by Tenniel, see Searight Archive.
