St Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary, was widely venerated in the 15th century in Northern Europe. The worn gilding of the figures suggests that this pendant was much used by its devout owner. He or she would probably have carried it attached to a rosary or suspended from a girdle.

Physical description

Pendant, silver, silver gilt, in the form of Anna Selbdritt, with St. Anne standing on a hexagonal base holding the crowned Virgin on her left arm and the Christ Child on her right. The faces and hands of St. Anne and the Virgin and the body of the Christ Child are left ungilded. The Christ Child stretches out his left hand to the Virgin, who reaches with her right hand towards him. Above and below are hoops that hold ribbed suspension rings.
