Physical description
Drawing in pencil in box asymmetrically placed to left in frame. 'Brer Rabbit' examines a lumpy sack hanging on the wall. Also on the wall are a skillet, shears, meat cleavers. A shotgun hangs above fireplace on adjoining wall. Fire-irons on stand and lit fire in hearth on right hand side. Sheep's skull and iron pot on ground near wall (centre background), scattered feathers and the wing of a bird lie in the foreground. Primary illustration surrounded by partial frame in pen over pencil containing 'Brer Rabbit' among nettles with paw to chin, looking puzzled. Other vegetation and back view of 'Brer Fox' in coat with sack on back, carrying a cane.

Object history note
Historic mount for a drawing by Beatrix Potter. Given by Leslie Linder (1904-1973) to the National Book League (now the Book Trust) in 1970 as part of a representative selection of Beatrix Potter's work. This selection, comprising 279 drawings and 38 early editions and now known as the Linder Collection, was acquired on long-term loan by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1989 and remains the property of a charitable trust, The Linder Trust.
