Bronze vessels for secular use, rather than for ritual use, made their appearance in the 11th century in China. This incense burner is shaped like a goose. It was probably much treasured by its owner so was buried with him when he died.

Bronze incense burner in the shape of a goose, China, ca. 1200-1300
Physical description
Incense burner shaped like a goose, cast in bronze.
In form of a goose, the neck and beak serving as a spout, the surface covered with a red and green patina, in the back is the lid. Anterior to 3rd century B.C. This, or a similar specimen, was in the collection of the Emperor Qianlong in the 18th century.

Purchased from Siegfried Bing (Paris), accessioned in 1876. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project.
