This rapidly executed but expressive little sketch is one of the studies which Goya made in preparation for a series of etched copies of portraits by Velazquez in the Spanish royal collection. The prints were published in 1778-9 and were well received by patriotic connoisseurs such as Antonio Ponz who enthused that Goya 'has certainly made known his capacity, intelligence and zeal to serve the nation, and lovers of Velazquez and his paintings must be grateful to him for this . . .'
