Place of origin

In 1863 the French artist Alphonse Legros was encouraged to come to London by his friend James McNeill Whistler, who introduced him to the Ionides family. Constantine Ionides became a friend and one of Legros' greatest patrons. Legros became a trusted advisor, who exerted a great influence over the development of Ionides' collection. Legros was a distinguished portraitist, and probably made this small sketch of his friend at some point in the 1870s.
