Costume worn by Declan Kelly as Nanki-Poo in a D'Oyly Carte Opera Company production of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan's opera, The Mikado, 1992
Physical description
S.713:1-2019: Robe

Gold lamé robe. The robe has stiff wide cap sleeves and wide stiff wide cap sleeves and a wide full skirt. Two bands of gold lamé reaching to a point just below the waist frame the left and right side of the front opening. There are decorated with stencil prints of pink, red and green flowers.
The upper part of the bodice extends into two box pleats at the centre back, creating a peplum effect at the rear. THis rest on the wide full skirt, which has been stiffened with channels of boning at the hem and side seams.
The tunic is lined with yellow polyester and fastens at the waist with two metal hooks and bars and a press stud. Four further press studs run down the front of the skirt.
A wide band of cream cotton runs around the waist of the robe (joining the skirt to the top). This join is masked by a separate yellow polyester[?] belt (S.713:4-2019).

S.713:2-2019: Kimono

Pale pink kimono style tunic woven with a raised pattern of curves discs. The tunic has wide hanging rectangular sleeves, it is longer at the rear than at the front and fastens asymmetrically, proper left over proper right, with three press studs.
It is not lined, but the sleeves feature layered cuffs. The base layer of these sleeves is formed from the same pink fabric as the tunic and is faced with deep crimson polyester, over this is a wide cuff formed from plain white cotton and the upper cuff is formed from a cream fabric woven with a floral design.
There are two press studs at the centre back interior of the neck and two small press studs at the proper left interior of the collar.

S.713:3-2019: Trousers

Pair of loose fitting pale pink trousers. The waistband is gathered with elastic and two long looped braces, formed from wide bands of white elastic tape, run from the front waist to the rear waist at the proper left and proper right side. The trousers are plain and are not lined, but wide bands of cream fabric, woven with a floral design, run around the hem of each trouser leg.

S.713:4-2019: Belt

Wide yellow polyester belt secured with three metal hooks and bars and two press studs. There is a further narrow angled fabric pouch at one side.
