Un forgeron

Print
1833 (made)
Artist/Maker

This is one of Eugène Delacroix's most original and powerful prints, based on a lost oil painting of the same subject known only from this image. Inspired by the dramatic contrasts of light and shade in the blacksmith's forge, Delacroix has exploited to the full the possibilities of the aquatint process to render rich darks from which the iron appears to glow with heat. This is a particularly fine, early impression before the erasure of marginal technical trials.
