Object history | Callcott was one of the most successful painters of his day, and this is an excellent and typical example of his work. He was a great friend of J.M.W.Turner, and indeed used the composition of an 1808 Turner riverscape in this composition, but in reverse. But he was never a mere copyist, and indeed Turner was inspired by Callcott's work in return. Callcott was criticised on occasion for aiming at artistic 'effect' rather than recording nature, but this is to misunderstand his intentions: his interest was principally in the depiction of light and atmosphere in their many forms - here, a heat haze mingling with mist rising from the water early on a sunny morning.
